Self Determination Basics
Self Determination helps you design your life. Through California’s Self Determination Program, the client directs an individualized budget to choose supports that are person-centered.
Independent facilitators guide you through some of the steps to get you there.
The statewide Self-Determination Program adheres to the following principles:
- Freedom – You plan your own life and make your own decisions, just like people without disabilities are able to do
- Authority – You decide how money is spent for your services and supports
- Support – You pick the people and supports that will help you live, work and play in your community
- Responsibility – You make decisions in your life to use public money and to accept your valued role in the community
- Confirmation – You are the most important person when making plans for your life. You are the decision maker about your services. Self-Determination means “nothing about you without you.”
Step 1: Contact Your Regional Center
If you are interested in participating in the SDP, reach out to your regional center for more information on how to get started.
These next steps can be completed independently before a budget from the Regional Center is finalized.
Step 3: Create Your Person Centered Plan
Marinette Group, you, and and anyone you choose to include in this process will make a detailed person-centered plan (PCP) based on your goals and vision for your life. Includes intake, pre-planning, planning, and enrollment.
You will share your PCP with your service coordinator to discuss your support needs, and eventually, your budget.
