The ages 3 to 6 can feel like a season of discovery. Your child is learning what they like, what overwhelms them, what helps them feel safe, and how they want to connect with other people. You are learning too. You are learning your child’s cues, your child’s rhythms, and the small changes that make a big difference in your day.

If your child qualifies for Regional Center, California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP) helps you build support around your child as they are now. You get more choice and power to shape services around your family’s real life.

This matters at this age, your child’s interests and needs can shift fast. A vendor or activity that worked at age three might not fit at age four. With SDP, you can adjust your plan without feeling like you are starting over.

In SDP, you choose the vendors and supports that align with your child’s needs, your culture, your language, your schedule, and your goals for family life. You can also choose supports that help your child participate in integrated community spaces, like parks, libraries, recreation programs, and neighborhood classes. Your child belongs in the community. Person-centered planning should make that easier.

As an advocate, I love this age because the most meaningful progress often happens in ordinary moments. Small routines shape big outcomes.

SDP can help you focus support on the routines you already have, instead of adding more appointments that do not translate into daily life.

SDP also gives you room to follow your child’s natural interests and turn them into growth. If your child lights up with music, you can choose a music class in your neighborhood and build goals around group participation, turn taking, and communication. If your child loves art, you can enroll them in a class where they practice attention, flexibility, and social connection while doing something they enjoy.

This is why “fit” is not a small detail. The right support person helps your child feel safe enough to try new things. The wrong fit can make every session feel like a battle. With SDP, you are not stuck, which many parents feel with traditional regional center services. You can choose what works, and you can change what does not.
